INCLEMENT WEATHER PROTOCOL Updated 8/24/2009

Protocol for Inclement Weather

•1.                The Jr. Titans practice in rain, snow and  cold weather.

•2.                We do not practice if there is lightening.

•3.                If there is lightening before practice, stay at home until the storm has ended.  If the storm does not end after 1 hour into our practice time, stay at home - practice will be called.

•4.                If there is a severe storm with lightening during practice, practice will be called and not resumed until 20 minutes after the storm has ended.

•5.                If the storm lasts more than 20 minutes, players should be picked up at practice.

We have made arrangements with the Maine Northfield Park District to use Apollo school to protect our players during severe storms.

Under no circumstances should any player who normally has a ride to practice, leave practice without having a ride.

A coach, board member, team parent or shed volunteer will remain at the practice facility until each player has been picked up regardless of the status of the weather. Please pick up your player on time. If you are going to be late, call 847-657-8966 so that we can make arrangements.

About the Program Updated 1/15/2010

The Glenview Jr. Titan Football organization has been in existence since 1988. It is a not-for-profit organization created to provide opportunities for the youth of Glenview to participate, learn, and play the game of football in a fun, competitive, and safe, environment. In 1991, we joined the Central Suburban Youth Football League commonly known as the CSYFL.

The CSYFL consists of teams from the Northern suburbs. They are Deerfield, Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Niles West, Northbrook, Skokie, Wilmette, and Winnetka.  We are one of the original members.

Our vision is to produce the most successful, fun, safe, and competitive instructional youth tackle football program in the area. We are a competitive athletic program that encourages participation across a broad spectrum of ages and sizes. We teach the fundamentals of tackle football by a combination of lecture, demonstration, correction, and repetition.

The coaching philosophy is based on individual teaching to maximize a player's skills in the successful performance of his or her assignments.

Mission Statement:
To have the most successful instructional youth football program in the area.

Goals:
a. To create a program in order to teach every player the fundamentals of tackle football.
b. To develop the skills needed to compete successfully.
c. To encourage and reward the players efforts to learn and improve these skills.
d. To nurture a passion for the sport.
e. To teach and reinforce the qualities of sportsmanship and team play.
f.  To create an atmosphere of respect for team, coaches, opponents, and officials.

Parent Information - READ CAREFULLY Updated 4/30/2009

This is our Parent Information Page.  We receive many questions from parents - we have have tried to answer as many of those as possible here.  Please contact us at 847-657-8966 if you have any questions.

In what league do Glenview Junior Titans participate?

TACKLE

Central Suburban Youth Football League (CSYFL)
Our players participate on Glenview teams in the CSYFL.  They will compete with teams from other area communities (Deerfield, Evanston, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Northbrook, Wilmette & Winnetka)

How are teams formed?

Team divisions are based on player grade and weight. Player grade is the grade the player will be entering at the start of the football season.

The parameters established for each division are:

Heavy Weight

Any players in the 7th or 8th grade as of September 1st of the season

The maximum weight for ball carriers at this level, including pass receivers, linebackers and defensive backs is 150 pounds

 Light Weight

All 8th grade players as of September 1st of the season who weigh 130 pounds or less

All 7th grade players as of September 1st of the season who weigh 140 pounds or less

To promote safety and improve participation at the lower level, the Central Suburban Youth Football League (CSYFL) unanimously voted at the March 11, 2008, CSYFL Board Meeting to institute a two tier system for the 5th and 6th grade football players. It is very similar to the higher level, Heavyweight and Lightweight.  It will consist of two Divisions, Middleweight and Flyweight. Middleweight

All 6th grade players, 91 pounds and above, will be playing at the Middleweight level.

All 5th grade players, 101 pounds and above, will be playing at the Middleweight level.

*Please note. At the Middleweight level, the CSYFL voted at the August 4, 2008 Board Meeting, to make the maximum weight for ball handling positions "115 pounds" for both 5th and 6th grade players. Any player over the above weight limit for his or her grade MUST be striped.

Flyweight

All 6th grade players, 90 pounds and under, will be playing at the Flyweight level.

All 5th grade players, 100 pounds and under, will be playing at the Flyweight level.

At the Flyweight level, there are NO STRIPERS. Players can play ANY position.

What equipment will I need for the season?  What do I need to purchase?
While the league provides most of the team uniform, parents will be responsible for the purchase of several items that are required for participation.

Helmet, Shoulder Pads, Hip and thigh pads:
You will need to purchase these items at the start of your first season of tackle football.  If you take good care of these items, they can last you until you outgrow them. There is generally no need to clean this equipment after each use, but it should be kept in good shape.  When the helmet becomes muddy, you may wipe it off with a damp cloth.  If any of the equipment becomes wet, make sure you store it in an area where it can air dry before the next practice or game.

The helmet must be all white.

Helmet decals:
All new players or those who have purchased new helmets will receive a decal for each side of their helmet.

Game Pants

If you are a new player, you are required to purchase gold game pants with matching belt for $25 at the time you register.  Barring a huge growth spurt, this can usually be utilized through 2 seasons of football.

Practice Pants:
You will need to supply your own football pants with pads for practice.  The game pants are the type that use slide in pads so try to find practice pants that also accomodate slide in pads (v. those that take snap in pads).  You should plan to use the pads you purchase with your practice pants for your game pants.  You may wear any color except for gold.

Mouthpiece:
Each player is required to have an "in-mouth" mouthpiece to participate in any game or practice.  Mouthpieces must be the kind that attach to the facemask of the helmet and generally cost $1.00 to $2.00 each.  We suggest that you purchase 2 or 3 mouthpieces for safety.  We do not have any specific statistics but it is our belief that no mouthpiece has ever survived a full season without being lost or chewed beyond recognition.  It is always a good idea for parents to carry an extra in the glove compartment of their car in case of a "game time" lost mouthpiece.  Please note: Coaches cannot be expected to supply "emergency" mouthpieces and will not allow players to practice or play without a mouthpiece.

Athletic supporter and protective cup:
All Glenview Junior Titans players are required to wear an athletic supporter and hard protective cup.

Practice jerseys:
Glenview Junior Titans will provide ONE practice jersey.  Please note: this jersey will not be distributed until your player is placed on a team.  This occurs in late August.  You will want to purchase your own practice jersey to wear before team placement and so your player has an extra, unless you enjoy doing laundry daily!

Undergarments:
Even when the temperature is hot, we recommend that all players wear a t-shirt under their shoulder pads.  This will keep the shoulder pad straps from rubbing directly against the skin and causing discomfort.

We also recommend that players wear shorts (compression shorts or similar) under their football pants and wear their athletic supporter over the shorts to keep from creating discomfort for the player.  There are special football undergarments now available for these purposes.  (UnderArmor, etc)

Shoes:
All Glenview Junior Titan players must wear football shoes with molded soles.  This means that they cannot wear shoes that contain "screw in" cleats.  Additionially, metal cleats are forbidden.

Hand pads & arm pads:
Players may wear arm, elbow and hand pads per their coach's guidelines.  Please see your team's head coach regarding his thoughts on which pads may be helpful or harmful for your player.

When will I know about team assignments?
Historically, we have had 2 fly weight teams, one middle weight team, 2 light weight teams and 1 heavy weight teams.  The weight of your 5th or 6th grade player determines if he/she is eligible for fly or middle weight.  Also, the weight of your 7th and 8th grade player determines if he/she is eligible for light weight.  Your player will be assigned to a team shortly after the first two weeks of practice and after the official "weigh in."  Teams are not stacked.  The coaches participate in a draft process, with the head coaches alternating between picking players.  The coaches pick the players they feel will be best for their team.  Once players are on their team, they will receive a practice jersey, color-coded for their team.

Can parents help coach?
Yes.  We are always looking of parents who have played football, have knowledge of the game or just want to learn to help out with teams.  It is a great way to interact with your child and learn the Junior Titan and GBS Titan way of doing things.  Just contact your head coach and let him know that your are interested and he will let you know how to get involved.

Are Head Coaches certified?
All of our head/supervising coaches are encouraged to be IHSA and ASEP certified.  The courses are available on-line and coaches recieve reimbursment for the cost of the class.

What is the Parent Code of Conduct?
It is the list of rules by which we expect parents to conduct themselves during the season.  Please make sure you read and understand it..  If you have any questions please contact one of the Junior Titan board members.  This Code of Conduct is based on the "Character Counts" program instituted in many of our local schools.

Do the Glenview Junior Titan Coaches and League Representatives have a code of conduct?
Yes.  All coaches must sign a Coaches Code of Conduct, which is supported by our league.

What do I do if I have a question?
First, ask your coach.  If your coach is unavailable or you choose not to ask him you should contact  a board member by e-mail or phone.  Because all of our administrators are volunteers and have full time jobs - it is best to forward all of your questions to our email address at juniortitanfootball@comcast.net. You may also leave a voice message for us at 847-657-8966.  Our preferred form of communication is e-mail.

What do I do if I have a complaint about my player's coach?
Talk to your coach directly before or after a practice or game.  If you are uncomfortable contacting him directly, you may contact the Glenview Junior Titan President, the Board Coaches Rep or any Glenview Junior Titan Board Member.

When are the games?
Most games are played on Sundays with starting times between 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM.  Occassionally, a weekday night game will be scheduled but this is fairly infrequent.  A game schedule for each team is posted on our web site as soon as it is available.

How many practices per week?
Practices will run Monday through Friday until the first game.  After that, most teams practice 3 or 4 times per week with an additional walk-through on Saturday morning or afternoon.   Practice schedules are developed at the discretion of the team's head coach.

Do we practice when it rains?
Yes - this is football.  Head coaches are in charge of practice cancellations - but remember we play games in the rain so sometimes we need to practice in the rain.  Most of the time we only cancel practice when lightning or other dangerous weather endangers our players and coaches or in the case of unplayable conditions (flooded fields, etc.).

Do we play games when it rains?
Yes - we just told you -- this is football.  We only cancel games when lightning or other dangerous weather endangers our players and coaches or in the case of unplayable conditions (flooded fields, etc.)

What is expected of parents regarding picking up players from practices and games?
Parents are expected to provide timely transportation to and from practice and games for their player.  Team coaches donate their time to the Junior Titan program, so please don't make them baby sit your player while you are "finishing one more thing" at home.

We also ask coaches not to be alone with any one player without another adult present.  You can see that your late arrival to a practice to pick up you player puts your coach in a difficult position.

Football is a game of discipline.  Being on time and in the correct place is part of that discipline.  If you are late getting your player to practice you may be making it difficult for that player to fit in with his coach's team rules.

Parent Code of Conduct Updated 4/30/2009

PARENTS CODE OF CONDUCT

As a parent of a Glenview Junior Titan Football player, I pledge to provide positive support, care and encouragement for my child(ren) participating in youth football by following this Parent's Code of Conduct:

  1. I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for players, coaches, and officials at every game, practice, or other Junior Titan events.
  2. I will cheer for my team from the stands with enthusiasm.  I will never yell obscenities or derogatory remarks aimed at the opponents, officials or coaches, or conduct myself in an offensive manner. I understand that as a result of those actions, my team can be penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, my child will be penalized by seeing limited playing time, and I may be removed from the field/stadium.
  3. I will always place the emotional and physical well-being of my child(ren) ahead of a personal desire to win.
  4. I pledge to reinforce and support my child's efforts. Winners are people who make maximum effort, continue to learn and improve, and do not let mistakes or fear of making mistakes stop them. I understand that mistakes are an inevitable part of the game and that children learn from their mistakes. I understand that children are born with different abilities and that the true measure is not how my child compares to others, but how he/she is doing in comparison to his or her best self.
  5. I understand that less than 1% of youth sports participants receive college scholarships and that the top three reasons kids play sports are a) to have fun, b)make new friends, and c)to learn new skills. I understand that the game is for the players and not the adults, and I will keep sports in the proper perspective.
  6. I will notify the Coach(es) of a game or practice that my child(ren) will miss.  I recognize that inexcusable or excessive absences by my child(ren) of practices or games will result in loss of playing time. I realize that I need to be available to pick up my child(ren) from games or practices due to inclement weather.
  7. I understand that in most instances my child(ren) will need to arrive 45-60 min before game time and that failure to do so could result in a loss of playing time.
  8. I pledge to "Honor the Game". I understand the importance of setting a good example for my child.  I will show respect for all involved in the game including coaches, players, opponents, opposing fans and officials. I understand that the officials make mistakes. If the officials make a "bad" call against my team, I will Honor the Game and be silent.
  9. I will require that my child(ren) coaches be equally respectful of the players, parents, and officials.
  10. I will not consume alcohol or smoke at any Junior Titan games or practices.
  11. I understand that if any of these rules are not followed, my team's head coach, and if needed, the Junior Titan executive board will decide necessary disciplines.
  12. I realize that Glenview Junior Titan Football is a non-profit organization and I understand that I may be asked to perform various volunteer duties throughout the season on game days.
